In Love With LOMOgraphy At The BoB

I went to the Singapore Arts House yesterday to check out their LOMOgraphy exhibition. LOMOgraphs are, in essence, random photographs shot with a LOMO-branded camera, which are novelty/toy cameras that come attached to a very specific, yet enticing philosophy of randomness. I’m totally digging it. Capturing life is what photography is for.

However I wish the LOMO cameras cost less. Sure, they are quirky and some have really novel features - but these features are decidedly low-end, just out of the norm, and don’t justify $60-70 for a 4-lens, 4-photo-in-one Action Sampler. You get the feeling the free-and-easy philosophy has been downgraded to mere hype and excessive marketing. Still, these cameras are capable of producing some amazing, unique photos, and they’re really tempting. I heard Asylum sells a range of these, so I’ll check with Chris soon.

The exhibition held a little voting contest to see which was the best LOMOgraph. I voted for this one:

You know, I originally planned on doing a videoblog post or something, but my lack of guts speaking to a self-held handycam in public prevented me from doing so. Ah well, now I have the troublesome task of uploading many pictures - a video would’ve made it so much easier to describe my experiences. I need new intestines soon. Or a suit of thicker skin.

Evening came, and I rushed off from the Arts House to grab some dinner before taking the public transport I so abhor to school for the Battle of the Bands concert. The show was overpriced, alright. $10 for a prefect-run concert at the old auditorium? I’m surprised at the turnout, which looked like a fullhouse. Must’ve been al lthe fangirls and fanboys from other instituitions.

They were as noisy as hell. Damnit. Rowdy, too. There was speculation of a fight among a gang of ACS Barker boys and someone else, and, sure enough, there was a police car called in after the concert.

Roshen’s band opened the night and I got them on video, as requested:

Well, my pick of the best band last night is ACS International’s. I believe they’re called ‘Loofah’. They performed a lovely rendition of Santana & Michelle Branch’s Game of Love, as well as a fairly good Sweetness by Jimmy Eat World. I’m so awed by their bassist/solo guitarist - that sexy multidisciplinarian.

A minor celebrity in Maia Lee, that Singapore Idol 2004 reject, graced the occasion. She performed some Chinese song I’d never heard before. Glen Goei was supposedly present as well but I was denied even the slightest glimpse of him.

(Yes, that’s Ms Linda Goon on the right of Maia Lee.)

Waiting for Roshen near the pick-up point after the concert, I spotted some girl carrying four(!) guitars. Maybe five. And she was quite petite. I admired her amazing feat for a few seconds before offering my help, but she politely declined. I should’ve helped anyway, for I think she might’ve been from ACS International - thus possibly wasting a chance to congratulate their band for their splendid showing, and get acquainted, and all the other possiblities that occur in my fantasy world.
