Why Don’t IM’s Have Contact Tagging?

On the subject of tagging…

I’ve noticed that most, if not all instant messenger protocols (at least the ones I use: MSN, Skype, GTalk and by extension Jabber) have a really shitty, outdated, cumbersome and inflexible way of organizing contacts: ‘groups’, or folders. Google Talk doesn’t even have that functionality.

Will someone please implement contact tagging? I have a whole load of contacts and I’m refraining from organizing them into groups, simply because it’s inadequate. Let’s say I have this contact who’s an Aussie and who’s part of my Guild Wars guild. So which of the groups am I going to file him under?

Tagging would effectively solve all such problems, and give me a hell less of a headache when trying to find that one particular person in my mess of display names.

So, might I expect contact tagging in the near future? I’m hopeful.
